Melan-100 (Iris-Vet series)
IMPORTANT
Read the manual provided with the instrument BEFORE using the NEW  Melan-100 (Iris-Vet series)!
For the older generation of units please contact us for manuals.
The following is just a brief description of the procedures.
Also, please refer to the "Medical Applications" for more detailed information on specific diagnostic procedures.
The pupil light reflex evaluation using Melan-100 (Iris-Vet Series)

1. Turn ON the main power switch located on the back of the instrument near the charging port. The
switch should be moved toward the ON position.

2. Turn on the instrument by pushing the ON/OFF button on the keyboard .
The
RED light is selected by default after turning the unit ON.
(A value of 200 is displayed on the screen. This is equal to the illumination intensity of 200 Kcd/m2)
By pushing the
small red button on the side of the instrument(see picture on the right) the light will
turn ON.
Push again to turn it OFF.
The light intensity can be modified from the "+ and -" buttons before the LED is ON or during the
operation.

3. Turn off the light in examination room and wait for 30 seconds in order to achieve the dark
adaptation.

4. Illuminate the right eye using the red light from a distance of one inch for not more than 10 seconds
and observe the changes in the pupil diameter. Remove the light source away from the eye after 10
seconds. If complete pupil constriction is achieved in less than 10 seconds, light source can be
turned off as soon as complete pupil constriction is observed (observed pupil diameter less than 4
mm).

5. Wait for 30 seconds so dark adaptation is achieved again, than illuminate the left eye with the red
light for not more than 10 seconds and observe change in the pupil diameter.

6. Select the
BLUE light by pushing the B (Blue) switch. A value of 200 Kcd/m2 is selected by default.

7. Illuminate the right eye using the blue light from a distance of one inch for not more than  10 seconds
and observe the changes in the pupil diameter. Remove the light source away from the eye after 10
seconds. If complete pupil constriction is achieved in less than 10 seconds, light source can be
turned off as soon as complete pupil constriction is observed (observed pupil diameter less than 4
mm).

8. Wait for 30 seconds so dark adaptation is achieved again, than illuminate the left eye with the
blue light for not more than  10 seconds and observe change in the pupil diameter.

9. Turn OFF the unit from the On/OFF button and then move the main power switch in the OFF position
(located near the charging port).

10. After all responses are observed and recorded, use the obtained results in combination with other
parameters obtained during clinical examination to establish diagnosis. Pupil light reflex
responses in absence of other diagnostic results obtained during eye examination cannot be
used to establish the final diagnosis.

Melan-100 (Iris-Vet series) light source (red, blue, white) should not be used with light intensities higher
than 200 Kcd/ m2 .
When using
Melan-100 (Iris-Vet series) at 200 Kcd/ m2 light intensities, continuous illumination should be
limited to 10 seconds to avoid any possible light induced damage.

Note: Always keep the unit with the main power switch(on the side close to the charging port) in OFF
position when NOT IN USE.
This cuts the power from the battery in order to keep it charged longer.

To charge the Li-Ion battery just connect the provided charger. A full charge takes approx 3 hours.
